About

About

I spent 25 years on the other side of the counter.

I’ve spent my career understanding how banking products, payments, operations and financial decisions work from the inside. Today, I help financial institutions, business owners and buyers solve problems, evaluate decisions and close the gap between what was designed, what was documented and what is actually happening.

Engagements

What the work looks like

Inside a bank or credit union

Fractional leadership during a vacancy or growth period, product and payments strategy, process redesign, SOP development and executive analytics. I work as an extension of the leadership team without the overhead of a full-time hire.

Inside a business

Banking relationship reviews, financial decision analysis, payment questions, lender conversations and problems that aren’t getting resolved through the usual channels. The goal is to understand what is happening, identify the options and help you make a better-informed decision.

Around a transaction

Banking due diligence for buyers and investors: deposit and merchant statements, financing arrangements, payment systems, ACH exposure and the banking relationships that will or will not transfer at close.

The Experience Behind the Name

Who is Tom the Banker?

Product Management • Payments • Deposits • Digital Banking • Analytics • Operations

Hi! I’m Tom. Banking has been the common thread throughout my career, but the work has rarely been confined to one part of the bank. I’ve worked across products, payments, deposits, digital banking, analytics and operations.

That experience taught me to look at problems from more than one direction: the customer, the product, the economics, the data and the operation that has to make it all work.

Tom the Banker is how I put that experience to work today, helping financial institutions, businesses and business buyers understand problems, evaluate decisions and figure out what to do next.

Background

What I bring to a file

The common thread is understanding how financial products, money, data and operations fit together, then knowing where to look when something isn’t working the way it should.

Executive banking leadership

Led products and initiatives across deposits, payments, lending, digital banking and operations, working across the functions where financial performance, customer experience and regulatory expectations meet.

Product management

Built, managed and improved banking products across deposits, payments and digital channels, using customer behavior, economics and performance data to guide decisions.

Payments

Card economics, ACH, interchange, payment networks, processor relationships and the economics behind how money moves.

Analytics & board reporting

Dozens of executive dashboards and board packages. Metrics chosen to support a decision, not to fill a page.

Documentation & SOPs

Full procedure sets for institutions that had been running on tribal knowledge and hoping nobody left.

Business evaluation

Reading a company through its bank and processor activity, the way an acquirer should before the close.

Principles

How I think about the work

  • Financial institutions are complex by design. Understanding how they make decisions makes it easier to understand the options on the other side of the table.

  • Most problems are visible once the statements, contracts and procedures are laid side by side. The hard part is knowing where to look.

  • Analysis is only useful if it is actionable enough to hand to a CPA, attorney or banker.

Approach

How I work

  • Scope and price agreed in writing before the work starts — fixed fee where it fits, hourly where it doesn’t.

  • Written findings you can hand to your CPA, attorney or banker.

  • Plain English. If a term matters, I define it once and use it consistently.

  • If I am not the right person for the work, I say so early and point you toward someone who is.

What I don’t do

Clear boundaries

  • Legal, tax or investment advice. I work alongside your advisors, not in place of them.

  • I don’t sell banking, investment or processing products and don’t accept referral compensation for recommending them.
